Paradox of Life

They came and summoned Patrick.
They took Fernando and Kilimanjaro the dog.
They came and called to the lady who sold at the vegetable market,
And my friend’s cousin’s husband but They did not take her.

I suspect They will also call upon my mother and father,
And everyone else around me.
I hear They will come for me, too!
The inevitable.
Or is it?

“I don’t want to die!” I cry to Them.
“There cannot be light without darkness,” They tell me.
No day without night, no life without death.
“I don’t want to die!” I cry again.
Yet having something to lose makes life worth living,
