What Could Have Been

come to think of it
you could have been that splatter
smeared on the wall
wetting all them sheets
and berlin conferencing that mattress
into conquest territories
off-springs that never were born
all lost bone marrow to see no ‘morrow

you still could have been that bullet tip
that saw and aimed for that bull’s eye
and in two ovums attached and exploded
and the two of you were here
and maybe even three four or five
but here you are one
when maybe there could have been more
anything could have been

maybe you could have been raised
to be a statesman
had the fear to debate
then in school
not been allowed to topple you off the podium
maybe a doctor or teacher too
had those nights in mushandirapamwe
been a work-together with your study group

maybe you needed not studied at all and dambudzo
you had his brains raining from god’s gifts treasure trove
and a scientist accountant astronaut and most of all a writer
he drove into how you think
cracking open that hard nut head
and to success you were headed

who knows?
but possibilities,
like tiny grains of sand,
they are way too many,
yet any one could be the one!
